Quick and Easy DIY Pumpkin Spiced Play Dough Recipe

Fall is here and in full swing. You know what that means… it’s pumpkin spice season! Whether you love that deliciously polarizing flavor or not, this quick and easy DIY pumpkin spiced play dough recipe will be a blast for you and your kids to make together.

Not only does this fall scented play dough smell absolutely incredible, it’s a great way to get in some family bonding time this holiday season. It’s super quick, easy to make, and even more important, clean-up is a breeze! Bonus: It’s completely non-toxic so you don’t have to worry about little hands sneaking bites to their mouths.

All you need for this simple recipe is flour, salt, cream of tartar, food dye, vegetable oil, water and pumpkin pie spice. Most of those things I already had in my pantry. Seriously, it’s so easy! Grab your kids, put on your aprons, check out the recipe below and get to making.

DIY PUMPKIN SPICED PLAY DOUGH RECIPE

Once this homemade play dough is mixed, it’s ready to play with. Bust out your play dough rollers, cutter and toys and let your imagination go wild. (I was worried the food dye might rub off on their hands or on my table, but it didn’t rub off at all! WIN!)

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Flour (+ some for the end)
  • 2 Teaspoons Cream of Tartar
  • 1/2 Cup Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 1 Cup Boiling Water
  • Red Food Dye

Directions

  1. In a bow, mix together flour, salt, cream of tartar, vegetable oil and pumpkin pie spice.
  2. Pour 1 cup of boiling water into bowl, add your desired amount of food dye and mix with a wooden spoon.
  3. Once the water has cooled enough, use your hands to continue mixing until a dough has formed. Add in small amounts of flour until the dough has reached the desired consistence. It shouldn’t be sticky!

HOW TO STORE YOUR HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH

Once you’re finished playing with your homemade play dough, it’s time to store it away for next time. Place it in a ziplock bag and seal it up completely, making sure to get all the air out. If you plan to make homemade play dough often, you may want to grab some of these reusable play dough containers to store it in. We don’t want that play dough getting hard!

Play dough isn’t just good for imaginative play, its also a great learning tool. Practice letters and sight words by making them out of your dough.
